With Prepaid Legal Plans - You’ve Got Attorneys!
You’ve probably heard similar expressions dozens or hundreds of times on TV or in the movies, “Get my attorney on the phone“ or, “My lawyer will get back to you.”
That would be just great - if you had a lawyer. Thanks to a burgeoning number of services, you actually can have an attorney available to you to answer questions or deal with characters so nasty that it seems worth almost any amount of money to just get them out of your life as soon as possible.
Before you decide to buy into such a plan, though, you need to take a serious assessment of your likely legal needs to determine whether such prepaid legal plans would be a good investment for you.
A basic access plan will give you access to an attorney for quick questions and advice when you are faced with an unexpected decision to make that may have legal repercussions down the road.
At the very least, because you are not worried about suddenly receiving a large bill for just asking a few questions, you may be more likely to obtain timely advice that will save you from much potential heartache and worry.
As with health plans, it is often possible for groups to negotiate much better rates than an individual is likely to obtain on their own. Some simple plans will provide free or low cost assistance with routine forms and documents, but more complex issues will usually still end up with the participant selecting an attorney from the plan and negotiating for a reasonable fee.
A comprehensive prepaid legal plan will add a host of additional services without further cost beyond the premium. These services often include help with real estate purchases, typical documents such as wills, letters or service contracts, representation in court, marital disputes and traffic infractions.
By relying on a group plan, the chances are good that those who selected the plan have checked to see that typical legal costs for members would be covered adequately. If the premium is paid for you by an employer or someone else, you have less negotiating power but a bit more security.
Nonetheless, it is never wise to completely rely on someone else to make sure all the bases have been covered. For starters, you are obtaining legal services. If the terms of the service are not in writing and completely clear, this does not speak well for the quality of legal assistance you are likely to receive.
If you are purchasing such a plan on your own, or contemplating obtaining one for your business and employees, the same is true for an agent who may be selling a plan. All terms and conditions should be clearly stated in writing; verbal agreements carry almost no weight in comparison to the written word.
